YouTube is no doubt the dominator when it comes to online video sharing, a fact which is supported by the site’s 1
billion subscriber base. However, there’s only one thing that has irked many YouTube users over the years, and that is one major restriction that the service imposes on them, the time limit, which obviously limits how long the videos can be. It has been at 10 minutes for as long as one can remember, however it was hiked up to 15 minutes in July. However, it looks like things just might be about to change.
The reasons, for which YouTube needs a time limit, are substantial on their own, as the service needs to prevent people from uploading entire television shows and movies, content which they obviously do not have the rights to. Now, YouTube has announced that it is entirely removing this particular time limit for its users; albeit some of them.
Currently, it can not be said for sure as to how many users will be enjoying YouTube without any time limits. In this regard, YouTube says that it will:
Begin allowing selected users with a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines and our copyright rules to upload videos that are longer than 15 minutes
So this is quite indistinct, however it can be safely assumed that YouTube will be rolling this out rather gradually, and it will be so, only for established accounts.
This new feature is apropos of YouTube’s Content ID system, which is without a doubt an incredible technology as it is able to take any new video uploaded to the site and cross-references it against YouTube’s massive database of copyrighted video that has been uploaded by cable networks, movie studios, and other partners. YouTube also allows content partners to upload longer videos; however that program isn’t open to all YouTube users.
