Google has never failed to impress, as it always brings new and innovative products to the table, for example, take Google own
operating system, the Android, which is now competing head to head with other operating systems like the iOS, and it can safely be said that Android is here to stay. Whereas more and more people opt for Android devices, the need for applications grows, and for that reason, Google has finally released Google Reader for Android, which all users to access their RSS feeds directly from their smartphones.
What’s interesting is the fact that it took Google a considerable amount of time to develop the Reader app for the Android, which is its own operating system, but nevertheless Android users will still be thankful for it, no matter if the iOS users have had an optimized version of Reader for quite some time now.
The application is quite similar to its desktop counterpart as it features unread counts, friends, sharing, liking, staring as well as it supports multiple accounts, synced preferences, full subscription feature and most importantly, search. The app will sync with the user’s existing Google Reader account, keeping the content consistent on both their desktop and smartphone.
Other features that are explained on Google’s Reader blog are:
- Volume-key navigation: if you enable this in the settings, you can navigate by using your phone’s volume keys for next and previous
- Long-press on a folder or subscription to bring up a contextual menu that lets you rename, unsubscribe or change folders
- If you hit the menu key on an individual item, you can use the “send” feature which integrates with other apps on your phone to send the item using any 3rd party app
So Google Reader can surely live up to the expectations that people would have from it, and surely it would not disappoint, however third-party clients are going to face a tough time as majority of the people would definitely opt for Google Reader for Android.
